Beltane & New Beginnings

Beltane & New Beginnings

Spring has been glorious in Cornwall the last few weeks.  The piercing blue skies and the pushing through of new life in the hedgerows have left a feeling of hope, in the face of uncertain times, both on a personal and world level.  And Team Bloom have even managed to catch a little colour in their cheeks on their daily walks to work!

Today, the 1st May, marks the ancient celebration of Beltane, an acknowledgment that we are moving into a season of warmth, renewal, and quiet transformation. Rooted in ancient tradition, this mid way moment between spring and summer invites us to embrace growth, and fresh beginnings—not just in life, but in how we care for ourselves.

And with that in mind, I'd like to talk a little about the daily ritual of using a body oil, rather than a lotion, to truly nourish your skin  As you see nature bloom into abundance around you, you may find that your skin craves purity and products that have lighter textures and nourishing botanicals at their heart... in other words, products that energetically feel as vibrant as the season itself.  Think floral infused body oils (like our Serenity blend) or energising and uplifting citrus oils (like our Radiance blend).  Each application of a natural body oil is an invitation to reconnect with your body through touch and scent. And if your skin is also feeling deplete and dry after the winter months, then body oils are truly your best friend.

Why? They contain a dramatically higher % of the pure botanicals and base oils that will feed your skin as you head into the Summer.  I love gardening, and it reminds me of how we care for our plants after the long winter. With the right kind of nourishment, everything has a chance to renew and thrive. And no—I’m definitely not comparing any of my lovely customers to tomato plants, but I'm sure you get the analogy!  At this time of year our skin needs pure and intensive botanical 'feeding' to prepare us for the months ahead.

Using body oils at Beltane also offers us a chance to ritually slow down and appreciate the moment we are in.  I like to use a body oil after bathing, when the skin is warm, the pores are open and absorption is at it's most beautiful.

Warm the oil between your palms, breathe deeply, and apply it with intention. Let it be more than skincare—let it be a quiet act of renewal. A shedding of the old, and a welcoming in of the new.

At its heart, Beltane is about becoming. About stepping into the version of yourself that’s been waiting beneath the surface, so this evening, or at some point across the next few days, give yourself the permission to honour your beautiful self and nourish your skin as a threshold - something that both protects and connects you.

Here’s to new beginnings, soft skin, and rituals that feel like coming home.

PS the photo of flowers was taken yesterday in my garden - Wiegela hortensis - it's never looked more beautiful and gives me a feeling of hope for the future, every time I see it.
