There’s something fitting about sea buckthorn oil being used in the skincare that we make - It’s a hardy plant that thrives in harsh, exposed environments, surviving all that the wild Atlantic off our Cornish coast throws at it — wind, salt air, storms. The berries appear in September through to October and are little bright orange jewels on the bushes that line parts of the coast path. The oil pressed from these vivid orange berries also shines in a bright vibrant hue, signalling the energy and potency within the liquid form. And while the plant is resilient and able to survive storms, the oil and it's many properties lend those same bright qualities to skincare. The doctrine of signatures - I am bright and vibrant, says the sea buckthorn berry and plant - and so will you be too!
We use sea buckthorn, and value it for exactly this reason — it supports skin that’s under pressure, rather than just glossing over it. It lends the energy of resilience to skin (particularly mid life skin) that is starting to feel the strain of hormonal shifts and depleting collagen
Helping skin feel stronger, not just softer
Sea buckthorn oil is unusually rich in fatty acids, including omega-7 — a lipid naturally found in human skin. This helps reinforce the skin barrier, improving hydration and resilience, while reducing dryness and sensitivity.
When the skin barrier is supported, skin often feels:
-
less tight
-
less reactive
-
more comfortable
-
better able to hold moisture
This is one of the reasons it’s particularly loved in coastal climates like Cornwall, where wind and salt air can leave skin feeling depleted.
Nutrient dense, to support and repair
Sea buckthorn oil is also packed with vitamins C and E, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. These nutrients help support skin regeneration and protect against environmental stressors that can weaken skin and accelerate aging
But despite it's potency, it doesn't aggravate skin in the ways than many more 'on trend' compounds can - i'm thinking here of retinoids (synthetic Vit A) that can cause flaking and peeling, AHA's which can smooth fine lines but also strip the skin and cause sensitivity outbreaks, and L-ascorbic acid (high concentration Vit C) which can cause oxidative stress in the higher concentration serums and actually damage rather than repair the skin. Sea buckthorn oil, while potent, is dfferent. Rather than working aggressively, it works with the skin, to help strenghten and recover gradually — making it ideal for:
-
dry or stressed skin
-
dull or tired complexions
-
sensitive or reactive skin
-
skin exposed to the elements
Anitoxidant powerhouse
The deep orange colour of sea buckthorn oil is a sure sign that this oil is doing good. The colour comes from carotenoids — antioxidant compounds that help defend against oxidative stress and support a healthier-looking glow which over time.
It’s not about instant brightness — more a slow return to skin that looks comfortable and alive. Many of our customres have complained of complexion dullness as they transition through the menopause and this oil is one of the best for combatting that unwanted side effect.
We only need to use small amounts of this favourite ingredient in our formulas to make a massive difference to their overall efficacy. And it's one of the reason why our timeless repair serum gel has such a gorgeous colour.

In essence...
Sea buckthorn oil isn’t about dramatic, overnight change. It’s about supporting the skin quietly — helping it feel stronger, less reactive, and more resilient. That’s why it’s become such a valued ingredient in our small batch skincare. Our focus will always be on gentle, plant-based support rather than quick fixes, on aging beautifully rather than disrupting our skin with harsh ingredients that over promise and under deliver.
Sometimes the most effective skincare doesn’t try to do everything at once — it simply helps your skin return to balance. Sea buckthorn oil does exactly that :)
